MTA Internet customers: An important change

Happy New Year!!

I got that out of the way without grinding my teeth into nothing, but let me tell ya, it was tough :D

DNS IP Changes

OLD DNS IPs:
  NS1: 12.6.42.1
  NS2: 12.6.42.2

NEW DNS IPs:
  NS1: 216.152.176.1
  NS2: 216.152.176.2

I was talking with MTA yesterday about possible service problems north of Healy and I found out that MTA is changing their IP addresses for their DNS servers. For those of you that understand what this means, the changes are seen in the box to the right:

For those that are clueless about this subject, and wish to get on with it, the MTA Help Desk numbers are listed for each community and webs addresses next, and for those that would like more information, a brief explanation and an example of what we are discussing will follow as well.

Alaska zone weather forecasts are back!

I had a little glitch in the php code that prevented the weather page from working when I moved the server to Los Angeles. The forecasts are retrieved and cached on-site at 5 minutes past the hour 24-7. This makes for a fast response! These are the same NOAA forecasts that are used by several interior radio stations. They cover the entire state of Alaska. I always figured that these were more helpful that current temperatures, but if someone wants them, I'll see what I can do.

Folks north of Healy have been experiencing lousy DSL service on an intermittent basis, and I have talked to MTA about this. We've tried substituting modems which does not improve the situation. I may hear more about this later today.

Stay warm ...

New policy documents for dbReporter blog

Political reporting and discussion will be moved away from the Public Comment blog and will take place next door at the dbReporter blog. Some of the topics are indeed painful and stressful - for me as well as anyone. Public Comment is open for everyone and identities can be kept totally anonymous by using or creating a new gMail, Yahoo, HotMail, Live, etc. e-mail address.

I'll be re-installing Gallery2 to work with the blog as it was before. Maybe we can find some cool pics to share with everyone.

Finally, and as always: Denali residents may have their own blog here, as well as any other webspace for free. "Sounds like a great deal," you say, "but you're still here." Can't help that, but wormfood will be on the menu soon enough. :D

Happy Things

When I was just a little tyke and Mom was tucking me in bed, she would always ask me about the happy things that had happened to me that day. Well, Mom refuses to do that anymore, so you will have to be the one(s) that hears about my Happy Thing today:

My perennial sweetheart Tina Graham and crew (Billy you lucky dawg!) pulled up in the driveway with a Neighbor to Neighbor distribution for me this afternoon. Wow! Things have been a bit tough lately, and I don't get out much. Anyway, I would like to take this opportunity to give a big

THANK YOU!!

to all of the good folks of Healy and it's 'burbs who caringly donated the goods and dollars to make this happen year after year. We've recently been chatting about volunteerism on this website and I can think of no finer example of giving than this. Thank you all once again from the bottom of my heart (yes - I do have one) ;)

A sad farewell

It is sad to see ths site shutting down do to lack of participation. I must confess I am guilty of not posting items or comments as frequently as I would like. It is also disappointing to see that the residents of our borough piss and moan about the lack of local media options but will not participate when an avenue is created for local news. The Denali Summit failed for lack of advertising - sad to see we can't support our local businesses but will gladly give our money to the Fairbanks North Star Borough or Mat-Su. Web radio was tried and that too failed for lack of participation. While this site was a means for folks to make comments with disclosing their identity, it seems that our politically correct U.S. society has created a herd of thin-skinned cows, afraid to say anything that might offend someone. What a shame to see our soceity just moo along, and accept things whether they agree or not rather than debate and discuss an issue. This site was not just so folks could read what others had to say but to contribute to the community dialouge. Seems we just don't really want to talk to each other but would rather stay holed up in our little cabins and be unsocial. How sad. Sure hope I don't hear folks complaining anymore about wanting local news. Apparently we don't have anything to share and until we do there doesn't seem to be much point in having any type of media outlet. Sorry to see it go Neldo.
